On the first day of the 3rd World Wind Conference, held in Beijing from the 1st to 4th of November, member of the German Parliament Hermann Scheer and Minister for the Environment Jürgen Trittin have been awarded by the World Wind Energy Association. With the award the conference honoured Germany’s leading position in wind energy, to which both politicians contributed substantially. Furthermore both laureates were awarded for their international engagement in promoting wind energy.
In his laudation Preben Maegaard, chairman of the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), stretched Hermann Scheer’s commitment for Renewable Energies as a legislator, author, visionary and chairman of two central organisations for Renewable Energies: EUROSOLAR and the World Council for Renewable Energies (WCRE). The World Wind Energy Award is the last in a row of awards, which make Hermann Scheer winner of all present World Prices for Renewable Energies. In 1988 he already got the World Solar Price and in 2000 he was awarded with the World Bio-Energy award.
For his dedication concerning an ecological sustainable energy supply during his, still lasting, term of office Mr. Trittin is honoured. In particular the jury appreciated the decision to phase out of nuclear energy, introducing the so-called ‘eco-tax’ (the additional taxation of fuel), the support for the Renewable-Energies-Law (EEG) and his role in organising the International Governmental Conference for Renewable Energies (renewables2004) in 2004.
In his acceptance speech Mr. Trittin thanked his ministry and in particular Dr. Wolfhart Dürrschmidt. He also referred to Hermann Scheer, saying that ‘without Hermann it wouldn’t have worked’.
Latter emphasised that the award is as much a reward for their merits as it is a obligation to go on.
Both laureates pointed out that China holds a key position for the world’s energetic future. Its demographic size and its rates of growth in energy consumption make it necessary to introduce a Renewable Energy policy, in which wind energy might take a leading role.
